Caring For Your Mount

After your Beautiful Mount has been on display for sometime you may notice that it has become dusty and it’s features aren't as shiny as the day you hung it on your wall. Here’s what you should do to get your mount looking just like you picked it up:

• If accessible you should use an air compressor at 40psi point towards the mounts hair, this will remove the dust and debris that might have settled there. If you do not have an air compressor you should use a common household blow dryer on COOL. You should NEVER apply heat to your mount it could damage the color of the hair.
• You might notice after sometime the eyes might become dull. To brighten them up you should use a Q-Tip with a little Windex.
• If you need to clean a feathered mount you should use Mineral Spirits (paint thinner) with a cotton ball and gently wipe the feathers in the direction that they are facing. You should stay away from all painted areas.
• If you have a fish mount that needs some cleaning simply use a damp lint free washcloth with water and gently clean dust away.
• To keep the horns and tusks clean on all mounts you can use any furniture polish, we like to use Scott’s Liquid Gold, which could be bought, at any local grocery store.

Preserving Your Mounts From Insects

Your mounts are trophies for a lifetime, so why shouldn’t they last a lifetime. Moths, beetles, and other small insects love to live and feed off mounts. Some burrow into the hairs while others will eat your mounts beyond any repairs. To avoid this problem you should regularly check your mounts for any moths, larva’s and cocoons that they might have made in your mount. Check the ears of the mount and any other cavities in which they could live and lay eggs. If you should find any sign of insect infestation you should do the following:

• Take your mounts out of the house and spray them with a commercial grade moth cleaner, leave them in some type of storage (barn, shed, etc.) You should spray them on a regular basis to prevent this problem from happening. (Once in the Spring & Fall)
• If you have tried this and it has not gotten rid of the problem you should call your taxidermist and bring your mounts in to have them fumigated.

DO NOT delay if you find this problem act on it fast before you know it you will have an insect problem in all your mounts. Should you find an insect problem you should treat all your mounts as if they have been exposed.

Some Tips To Keep Your Mount Looking Like it did the first day you picked it up......

You should always try to keep your mounts away from any continuous heat source.  The same with windows try to avoid too much sun exposure to the mount; this will also have an impact on the mounts fur. Also try to limit the amount of exposure from cigarette/cigar smoking, this will change the color of the fur and may cause the eyes to be very cloudy.
